Last day of work before Christmas! We hope it's like the last day of term and you got to bring in games and stuff.
The time between Christmas and New Year is ideal for getting your career break plans together - you're off work (hopefully), you've got space to think, and you've got time to start getting stuff together. 2012 is going to be your year - the year you make lasting changes to your life.
Let's get started with some inspiration and news and fun stuff.
NEW ON THE SITE
We've just added 14 new listings, including short-term volunteering, work in Australia and kung-fu school in China - yes really! You can search for a career break here or if that's too much trouble, have a look at everything we've got available.

KEEPING IN TOUCH
We try to keep it relevant, interesting and not all about ourselves.
Career Break Daily - if you want to look at a wide range of stuff - this is our online newspaper that collects news and stories from different sources such as travel bloggers, news sites, etc.
Career Break Twylah page - if you just want to look at career break stuff - it's all our own tweets organised by category.
Career Break Twitter feed - if you like bite-sized info.
Career Break Facebook page - if you're already on Facebook and you don't want us in your face all the time.
WHAT YOU ARE TELLING US
"Great concept" - we don't know if they're talking about the site or career breaks in general, but thanks!
"Being too attached to the outcome makes people sad. I'm talking more of letting the journey be the thing rather than the destination." We disagreed with this - I'd rather be chilling on a Thai beach than squashed into an economy airline seat! What do you think? Reply to this email and tell us (it goes to a real person so hurry up because she starts drinking at 4pm).

QUESTION OF THE MONTH
"We've want to hire someone on a 3-month contract and they are currently on a sabbatical from [name of company]. How do we know if they are allowed to do paid work?"
Our answer: usually, when someone is on a sabbatical, they are not allowed to do paid work for another company. We told the caller that she will need to see paperwork from the person they want to hire - an employment contract and/or their career break agreement. And on a similar note, we also got this question:
"If I do paid work while I'm on sabbatical, will they find out?"
Our answer: probably, yes. We don't condone lying to employers (or potential employers) because it's a sackable offence. Also, if you've lied, you can't put it on your CV, get a reference or anything. Not worth it.
CAREER BREAK, TRAVEL AND WORK NEWS ROUND-UP
All the employment news this month has been doom and gloom, apart from the fact Asda are creating new jobs. So you know where to go if you want some part-time work!
Christchurch in New Zealand has been hit by more earthquakes. No deaths or injuries reported, thankfully. Visit the FCO's New Zealand page for updated travel advice.
The government is cracking down on hidden last-minute travel fees and surcharges, like those imposed by budget airlines. Read more about it here.
Finally, regular readers will know that we've been rebuilding The Career Break Site - we're hoping that the new site will be ready by the middle of January. We're making it mobile-friendly, faster and easier to use. If you've got a suggestion for the new site, or you'd like to be featured yourself, send us an email and tell us what's on your mind.
I phoned my work this morning and said, "Sorry boss, I can't come in today, I have a wee cough."
He said, "You have a wee cough?"
I said "Really? Cheers boss, see you next week!"
We hope you have a fab Christmas, a super New Year, and a 2012 that's full of career break loveliness. See you in January.
