2 April 2013

HELLO

Welcome to the March newsletter. Yes, we know it's April already but we got all flummoxed by the Easter break (it doesn't take much to flummox us to be honest). Anyway, it's here now and we've got shiny new sections for you, including free stuff and upcoming career breaks.

So dive in!

SPONSORED - NEW CAREER BREAKS IN THE PHILIPPINES

The Philippines is the latest addition to the family of Projects Abroad destinations. Volunteer projects are beginning this month and are perfect for anyone wanting a unique Asian experience whilst doing something worthwhile in a developing country. You can do medicine and healthcare, or work with kids in schools and orphanages. It's not all hard work though - you're based on an island so you can dive or snorkel in your spare time, go island-hopping, or just take some much-needed rest on the beach!

For more about these projects, and to apply, visit the Projects Abroad Philippines page. Like all our partners, they're vetted and approved by us.

NEW THING - CAREER BREAKS STARTING THIS MONTH

If you're in need of a quick getaway! A list of all our career breaks starting in April can be found here.

ANOTHER NEW THING - FREE STUFF ROUND-UP

We like stuff, and we like free, so we trawled the interweb for travel-related freebies that career breakers like you might want.

Free photography e-book - it comes with coupons but you probably can't use these outside the US.

Free pocket guides to cities around the world - this from our mates at Hostelworld.

TripIt is a free app that helps you organise your travel plans (that link goes to the Android app, you can find their whole site here).

Finally, free cone day at Ben & Jerry's is April 9th - nothing to do with travel but who doesn't like free ice cream, right?

Have you found anything free that is work or travel related? Tell us and we'll stick it in next month (we'll credit you if you want).

PHOTO CORNER - YOUR MONTHLY DOSE OF INSPIRATION

That Russian bloke who secretly climbed the pyramids has got some great pics of his antics on his blog. Click (+ 20 фото и текст ) below the first pic to see them all (we can't give you the direct link, it's an odd set-up).

COMPETITION

Win one of 5 holidays in the Guardian / Observer travel awards - closing date is 6th April.

ON THE BLOG

Very diverse round-up for you today.

First up, there's a post about travel insurance - it's written by an industry insider so has some useful tips and things to remember.

Our second guest post is from a house-sitting agency so it's obviously about house-sitting! House-sitting: tips for success includes advice for both owners and sitters.

The first infographic to feature on the blog is about the history of the CV. Did you know it was invented by Leonardo da Vinci?!

We've got a lovely new travellers tale from Katie who explains why taking a career break is the best thing she's ever done. She sent us some pictures of herself in Kenya, which may well make you jealous.

And the silly fun post this month is the 10 commandments of career breaks. Includes one use of the word 'pickle'.

All these, and the rest of our blog posts, can be found here: http://www.thecareerbreaksite.com/blog. We're currently looking for some men to interview. If you're a man who's taken a career break, and you can talk, please drop us a line.

TIP OF THE MONTH

If you're going on a long-haul flight, take baby wipes or make-up remover wipes, to freshen up before you land (cos there's always a queue for the loos then!)

If you have a tip for us, email info@thecareerbreaksite.com - we will credit you unless you want to stay anonymous.

JOKE

I've just seen an advert in my local newspaper.

ACCOUNTANT NEEDED!
£35,000 - £40,000

So I phoned them up and said, "The answer is -£5,000."

Have a lovely April, and we'll see you at the end of the month. Let's hope it's warmed up a bit by then!

Love,

The Career Break Site
